Most smart locks for residential use are designed to replace a standard deadbolt. They use the same 2-1/8-inch bore in the door face and the same edge bore for the bolt. We remove your existing deadbolt and mount the smart lock using the existing prep in the door. No new drilling in most cases.
The interior side of a smart lock is typically bulkier than a traditional thumb turn. We check that the door and frame give enough clearance. On some doors with a very tight gap between the door and frame trim, the interior assembly needs a slight trim plate adjustment.
After mounting, we run the full configuration. Pairing to the app, setting a master code, creating any initial user codes you want from the start, confirming the auto-lock timer if you’re using one, and walking through what happens when the battery gets low. We test the lock with the app and with the keypad before we close up the job.

Most smart locks have a physical key override, a traditional cylinder built into the exterior hardware that takes a standard key. We record that key alongside your code setup. Some models, particularly the Schlage Encode and certain Yale units, have a 9V terminal on the exterior. You touch a 9V battery to it for a few seconds, which provides just enough power to enter your code. We show you this in person before we leave.
