Key fobs are small radios. They broadcast a unique rolling code that your vehicle’s receiver checks before responding. When that communication breaks down, the fob looks dead even if nothing is physically wrong with it.
The most common causes are simple: a battery that ran out, a fob that lost sync after the car’s battery was disconnected, or a fob that was never programmed to the vehicle at all. Less often, the fob itself is damaged or the vehicle’s receiver has a fault.
We diagnose this over the phone when you describe the symptoms. If the fob just needs a battery, we will tell you. If it needs programming, we come out. We do not dispatch a truck for a $3 fix.

How Fob Programming Works
Your vehicle stores a list of recognized fob codes in its body control module. Programming adds a new code to that list, or re-registers a code that was dropped. The process varies by vehicle manufacturer. Some cars allow self-programming through a button sequence. Most modern vehicles require a professional tool connected to the OBD port.
We carry the professional tools. When we arrive, we connect to your car’s diagnostic port and run the programming sequence specific to your make and model. For OEM fobs, the process is direct. For aftermarket fobs, we confirm compatibility first, then run the same process.
Once programming is complete, we test every button: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, and remote start if equipped. We do not hand the fob back and drive off. We verify it before we leave.
When You Need a New Fob
If your fob is physically damaged, cracked, or the buttons no longer make contact, programming a dead unit will not help. We carry commonly needed fob housings and can assess whether your fob just needs a new shell or whether the electronics inside are also gone.
In cases where a replacement fob is needed, we explain your options: OEM from the vehicle manufacturer (highest compatibility, higher cost), or a compatible aftermarket unit (lower cost, same function for most vehicles). You decide what makes sense for your situation.
