The Jersey Shore locksmith market has its own quirks. In July, everything is packed and a lockout in Seaside Heights or Point Pleasant Beach means working around beach traffic and limited parking. In January, the shore is quiet, but the people who live here year-round still need the same service.
Monmouth County’s coastal communities stretch from the Sandy Hook peninsula through the denser urban energy of Asbury Park and Long Branch, then inland to Red Bank and Freehold. Ocean County is enormous, running from Brick and Lakewood in the north down through Toms River and out to Long Beach Island. The causeways onto the barrier islands are the pinch point that shapes everything about timing here, and in season they can add serious travel time in both directions.
This is the single biggest difference between coastal and inland lock work, and most property owners do not learn it until a key stops turning.
Airborne salt does not stop at the dune line. Chloride carries inland on the wind and settles on every exposed surface, including the parts of a lock you never see. Inside the cylinder, it attacks the springs first, because they are thin and under constant tension. Weak springs mean pins that do not return to position, which is why an aging shore lock starts needing a jiggle before it turns. The plug itself corrodes against the shell, and eventually the key turns with force or not at all.
Sand compounds it. Grains work into the keyway every time a sandy key goes in, and they act as an abrasive on the pin chambers and the plug. The combination of corrosion and abrasion is why beachfront hardware ages on a completely different schedule than the same lock five miles inland.
There are practical countermeasures. Choose hardware rated for coastal exposure, which usually means stainless or a marine grade finish rather than plain brass plating. Use a dry graphite or PTFE lubricant in the cylinder rather than a wet oil, because oil captures sand and turns into grinding paste. Rinse and dry keys that have been on the beach before using them. And treat a stiff key as a scheduled repair rather than something to force, because a key snapped inside a corroded plug at a rental changeover is a much larger problem than a cylinder swap would have been.
A key that needs force at the shore is not a quirk. It is corrosion inside the cylinder, and forcing it is how keys snap off in the plug.

Every season a rental hands physical keys to a stream of guests, cleaners, and contractors. Any one of those keys can be copied at a hardware store for a few dollars, and there is no record when it happens. Over several seasons, the number of working keys to a property becomes genuinely unknown.
Two common approaches address this. The first is scheduled rekeying, where the cylinders are repinned to a new key on a regular cadence, typically between seasons or after any turnover where a key went missing. Keying multiple doors alike at the same time keeps one key running the front, back, and outbuildings. The second is moving to a keypad lock, where the access code changes between stays and no physical key changes hands at all. At the shore the keypad option carries a maintenance cost, since salt air and humidity are hard on battery contacts and electronics, so it needs weather rated hardware, a mechanical override, and battery changes on a calendar rather than on failure.
Coastal storms damage locks in a way that is easy to underestimate. Water that reaches a lock carries silt and salt into the cylinder, and the damage happens as it dries, when corrosion sets and the internals seize. Cleaning the exterior does nothing for that.
The frame matters just as much. Wood doors and jambs swell when saturated and do not always return to their original geometry. The result is a bolt that no longer lines up with the strike opening, so the door has to be pulled or lifted to lock. Owners often blame the lock when the actual fix is realigning the strike, adjusting the hinges, or repairing a jamb that has moved. Any real storm recovery walk-through should cover the cylinder, the bolt throw, the strike alignment, and the condition of the jamb.

Seasonal markets attract seasonal operators, and the shore sees more of the traveling variety than most of the state. Advertised prices in the $35 range that balloon at the door are a recurring complaint pattern statewide. Getting a license number and a written total before anyone starts is the practical defense, and both questions are reasonable to ask of anyone at any hour.

Travel time onto the islands is longer than an inland call, especially over the causeways in season, and any honest quote will account for that rather than ignore it.
Salt. Airborne chloride reaches well past the beachfront and attacks the metal inside the lock, not just the visible finish. For a rental with several doors, keying them alike so one key opens the front, back, and shed is usually the practical setup. Properties with high turnover often move to a keypad lock instead, since you can change a code between stays without touching the hardware at all.

Submerged or heavily wetted locks rarely recover on their own. Water carries silt and salt into the cylinder, and once it dries the internal parts corrode and seize. Doors and frames also swell and shift, which throws off the alignment between the bolt and the strike so the lock binds even when the cylinder is fine. Storm recovery normally means replacing affected cylinders and realigning or repairing the door and strike, not just lubricating what is there.
Year-round residents of Monmouth and Ocean county coastal towns have the same need in February as in August, and requests are welcome in any season. Off-season is actually the better time to schedule non-urgent work like rekeying, hardware upgrades, or access control for a business, because scheduling is easier when the shore traffic is gone.
